Palace of Independence (2015)

The Palace of Independence ( Belarusian Палац Незалежнасці Palaz Nesaleschnaszi or Russian Дворец Независимости Dworez Nesawissimosti ) is a building in the Belarusian capital Minsk . It is located on Siegerallee ( Belarusian Праспект Пераможцаў Praspekt Peramoschzau or Russian Проспект Победителей Prospekt Pobeditelei ), next to the BelExpo exhibition center and the State Flag Square, not far from the Victory Park.

Construction work on the Independence Palace began in summer 2011. On October 24, 2013, the building was put into operation. The total area of the palace is about 50,000 square meters. It is equipped with several hundred rooms.

function

Belarusian President Alyaksandr Lukashenka expressed the hope that the Palace of Independence and the adjoining State Flag Square will become an expressive symbol of Belarusian sovereignty and independence. According to the president, the palace was built with the aim of hosting important meetings and events, such as receiving foreign delegations, honoring parents with large children and ceremonies for admitting children to the pioneer organization . The building is not a residence of the president and there is only a study for the head of state. The President assured that the palace would be open to the general public. However, after the building was erected, it was heavily guarded and closed to the public.

Mortgage lending

The construction of the Palace of Independence was the subject of heavy criticism due to the poor economic situation in the country. President Lukashenka assured that "not a single cent" from the state budget was invested in the construction of the Palace of Independence, but did not name any sources of funding. According to independent media, the head of state's words are not true. According to Presidential Decrees No. 75 of January 17, 2012 and No. 126 of March 14, 2013, around 135 million US dollars were made available from the state budget for the construction of the palace. It later became known that additional funds for the construction were made available by the Executive Committee of the City of Minsk.
