Palace of the Zarmakoye

The palace of Zarmakoye is the seat of the Sultan of Dosso in Niger .

Location and architecture

The palace is located in the city center of Dosso. The white building defines the cityscape. Opposite is the Great Mosque of Dosso .

The palace area is surrounded by a wall. In the inner courtyard, which is reserved for women, there is an old well, the Dey Zarmakoye . Zarmakoye or Djermakoye is the old ruler title of the Sultan of Dosso. All Zarmakoye von Dosso who have died since the palace was built are buried here, including Issoufou Saïdou Djermakoye .

history

The Zarmakoye have been the traditional rulers of the Zarma since the 15th century . In 1902 the Zarmakoye Aoûta of Dosso was equated with the ruler of Maradi and thus the most powerful Zarma ruler. During his reign, the palace of the Zarmakoye was built in 1904.

The palace is since 2006 on the Tentative List for World Heritage in Niger entered. When the Nigerien President Mamadou Tandja sought a third term in office not provided for in the constitution in 2009, the Zarmakoye Maidanda was one of his supporters. Maidanda awarded Tandja the honorary title Mazayaki in June 2009 , which was traditionally reserved for the war strategists of the Zarmakoye. As a result, riots broke out and parts of the palace were burned down by opponents of the regime.
