The Palazzo Buondelmonti , or Scali-Buondelmonti , is located in the Piazza Santa Trinita in Florence .

history

At this point the Scali had their buildings, which went over to the Del Bene and then to the Cambi. The palace was ceded to the Buondelmonti in 1517 , who began renovating the facade around 1525. The Buondelmonti family was one of the oldest Florentine families and has owned some properties in Borgo Santi Apostoli since the Middle Ages and was very connected to the Church of Santa Trinita and the Vallombrosaner , as its founder Johannes Gualbertos was descended from this family.

The palace is a typical example of the residential building of the Florentine patrician families at the end of the 15th century, with more sober forms than the great palaces of the first half of the 15th century ( Palazzo Strozzi , Palazzo Medici ...). Other examples of this decorative typology are in particular the Palazzo Gondi in Piazza San Firenze (by Giuliano da Sangallo ) or the Palazzo Guadagni in Piazza Santo Spirito. The concept is attributed to Baccio d'Agnolo or Cronaca and was commissioned by the brothers Lorenzo and Leonardo Buondelmonti.

In 1774, when the family died out, due to the death of Francesco Gioacchino Buondelmonti without a male heir, the palace was divided and rented by Francesco's daughter.

In 1819 Giovan Pietro Vieusseux opened the famous Gabinetto Vieusseux, which is now housed in Palazzo Strozzi. In the rooms of the Palazzo Buondelmonti important Italian and European personalities like Giacomo Leopardi , Alessandro Manzoni , Niccolò Tommaseo , Gino Capponi , Alexandre Dumas , Stendhal and many others had the opportunity to meet. In 1870 the Gabinetto moved first to the Palazzo Feroni and then to the Palazzo Strozzi, where it is still located today.

A restoration in the 20th century reopened the loggia on the top floor.

architecture

The building has the typical three floors plus a high ground floor and two rows of arched windows in seven axes, which are surrounded by simple stone frames. There is a basement at the corners . The ground floor, which is particularly high, is decorated with stone blocks with four arches. The upper floors are plastered and originally had monochrome graffiti with the story of Philippo Scolari , a military leader who belonged to the Buondelmonti family, the work of Jacopo di Francesco.

Memorial plaques

There are two plaques on the facade: one commemorates the hospitality that Zanobi Buondelmonti showed to Ludovico Ariosto , and the other commemorates Giovanni Pietro Vieusseux and his literary cabinet, which had its first seat here.
