Gino Alessandro Giuseppe Gaspardo Marchese Capponi (born September 14, 1792 in Florence , † February 3, 1876 ibid) was an Italian politician , historian and poet . He is considered the forerunner of neoguelfism .

Life

Gino Capponi came from a well-known family that played an important political role in Florence as early as the 14th century. He acquired a varied education through studies and travels and lived almost exclusively in the sciences and humane endeavors, but had the misfortune of going blind early .

In July 1848 he took over the leadership of the Tuscan government, but, suspected by the radicals for his temperance and love of peace, withdrew into private life after 40 days. He approved of the upheaval of 1859, although he did not take an outstanding part in it. Victor Emanuel appointed him honorary president of the Institute of Higher Studies and a member of the Senate, where he participated in the work of the commissions, while he displayed only a mediocre speaking ability in the debates. Depressed by domestic misfortune, but highly celebrated, he died on February 3, 1876.

In the scientific field he published a number of historical works in the Archivio Storico Italiano and edited Pietro Colletta's Storia del reame di Napoli , the Documenti di storia italiana (Florence 1836-37), among others. In 1842 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . Since 1867 he was a foreign member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .

He also participated in the lexical work of the Accademia della Crusca and in the improvement of the text of Dante's Divine Comedy . He was therefore placed at the head of the historical commission for Tuscany, Umbria and the Marches in 1862.

Capponi's main work is the Storia della repubblica di Firenze (Florence 1875, 2 vol .; German by Hans Dütschke , Leipzig 1877), which, although not strictly critical in its older part, has many other advantages of a monumental work of history. His Scritti editi ed inediti was published by Tabarrini (Florence 1877, 2 vols.), His Lettere Carraresi (das. 1882-1884, 3 vols.).
