Palazzo Cendon
Palazzo Cendon is a palace in Venice in the Veneto region of Italy . It is located in the Cannaregio sestiere on the Fondamenta Savorgnan , about 60 meters east of the confluence of the Rio della Crea .
history
The Cendons , a rich but not aristocratic merchant family, originally had the small palace built in the 15th century. Like the nobles, the ancestral citizens of Venice adopted coats of arms and shields , which indicated an ancient or Roman origin of the family; in the case of the Cendons, it was a stripe decorated with three stars. In the lower part of the coat of arms, which can be found on the facade, one can read the following inscription: Centonia Fam. Nob. Olim. Rome. Parm. Q. Ex Qua Pata Et Vene. Civil. MCCCCXXXVII . According to this inscription, the Cendon or Centon family first flourished in Rome and Parma , then moved to Padua and finally, in 1437, to Venice.
The original house was expanded so much in 1501 that some people saw it as a small palace. Today it's a hotel.
