Palazzo De Sterlich

The Palazzo De Sterlich is a villa in the historic center of the Italian municipality of Cermignano in the province of Teramo . It is located in Via Salita Castello opposite the Santa Lucia Church .

history

The Palazzo De Sterlich was the main residence of the Baron de Scorrano, Sigismondo de Sterlich . The Barons of Scorrano belonged to one of the most famous feudal families in the Teramo province. Already in the 12th century they owned the Scorrano and Mons ( Montegualtieri ) fiefs ; they were fastened by them. You appear as the owner of these fiefs in the Norman fief book. It is not yet known how the De Sterlichs acquired their title in the early sixteenth century. Some historians from Abruzzo believe that this succession was due to a marriage, with the original branch of the Barons de Scorrano merging into the De Sterlich family . Other historians believe in the extinction of the De Scorranos family branch and a subsequent granting of fiefs to the De Sterlichs , who came to Abruzzo with Emperor Charles V from Austria .

Most likely the fiefdom of Cermignano, like those of Scorrano and Mons, was in the hands of the De Scorranos and became the property of the De Sterlichs at the beginning of the 16th century . In-depth studies of the old De Sterlich family have not yet been carried out and only fragments of historical notes remain. Most of the documentary sources on the De Sterlichs were found in the historical archive of the Superintendenz Teramo, where there are a number of documents on the last descendant of the family, Diego de Sterlich, Marchese Volante . On the other hand, there is another continuous documentation in the Castello di Nocciano in the province of Pescara (also about the fief of the De Sterlich-Aliprandi ), which was later transferred to the document archives of the province of Pescara.

The villa was built in the 16th century. In the 20th century it belonged to Diego de Sterlich-Aliprandi , a well-known racing driver. The settlement of Cermignano belonged to the family together with the centers of Scorrano and Montegualtieri , which are now districts of Cermignano. During the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, the fall of the Duchy of Acquaviva , which included many fiefs in the province of Ascoli Piceno ( Acquaviva Picena, Spinetoli, San Benedetto del Tronto , etc.), as well as the province of Teramo ( Teramo , Sant'Omero, Corropoli, Tortoreto, Giulianova, Notaresco, Guardia Vomano, Castellato, Bisenti, Bellante, Mosciano Sant'Angelo, Atri, Silvi, Castilenti, Montefino, Cellino Attanasio etc.) and the province of Pescara ( Elice, Montesilvano Colle, Collecorvino, Pianella, San Valentino in Abruzzo citeriore, Città Sant'Angelo, Castellammare Adriatico , etc.) to the new baronates ; among them stood out that of the De Sterlich family , who added them to their property, as well as Cermignano, Scorrano and Montegualtieri , also Castilenti, Villa San Romualdo, Montefino , part of Silvi and Città Sant'Angelo (shared with Sorricchio ), part of Pianella , one of Picciano and Bisenti . At the end of the 17th century, the De Sterlichs also became feudal lords of Nocciano and part of Loreto Aprutino . In 1695, Rinaldo de Sterlich, Marchese of Cermignano , bought a fiefdom that included a large area of La Selva, Colle di Selva, Colle Imperatore (today part of the municipality of Mosciano Sant'Angelo ), Cologna and part of Notaresco , and touched the fiefdom from Poggio Morello to the touch of Giulianova , which was previously state property of the Kingdom of Naples . The new aristocracy of Teramo, represented by the Justiziar Melchiorre Delfico and his brother Giambattista , opposed this change of ownership. To all of the De Sterlichs' fiefs , others were added through relatives and marriages with other noble families, e.g. B. the Alliprandis, Castigliones and Torres . The most important family ties of the De Sterlichs include those with the barons Aliprandi , who brought in numerous fiefs in the areas around Chieti and Pescara .

They were given the title of patricians of Penne , seat of an important diocese in Abruzzo.

description

The villa was built in 1541 for the Baron von Scorrano, Sigismondo de Sterlich . Today the city administration of Cermignano is housed in the historical villa. The adjacent houses have been restored and turned into a museum.
