Palazzo del Podestà (Bologna)

Bologna, Palazzo del Podestà

The Palazzo del Podestà (Palace of the Podestà ) of Bologna was built around 1200 on the then emerging Piazza Maggiore , as a building for the execution of public tasks and as the seat of the Podestà and its officials. Today's complex looks quite different from what it was in the Middle Ages, especially since the adjacent Palazzo Re Enzo was built later.

The palace

It is a large structure that is crossed by two streets. These two streets intersect at the bottom of the Voltone del Podestà (vault of the Podestà), above which the so-called Torre dell'Arengo rises, the tower with the bell that called the population together for extraordinary events. In 1525, under the vault, the terracotta statues of the patron saints of the city, Petronius , Proculus , Dominic and Francis of Assisi , made by Alfonso Lombardi , were placed in the four corners. In 1453, Aristotele Fioravanti set the current bell and redesigned the facade in a Renaissance style at the behest of Giovanni II Bentivoglio . The palace served as a theater between the 15th and 18th centuries and was decorated by Adolfo De Carolis with a series of murals at the beginning of the 20th century (including a fresco titled Abolition of Serfdom in memory of the events of 1256 and of Liber Paradisus ).

Curiosity

Under the Voltone del Podestà you can perceive an extraordinary audio event : the visitors can also communicate with each other in low voices from the four opposite corners of the vault.
