biography

Uspensky Cathedral

Little is known of Fioravanti's early years. He was born in Bologna into a family of architects and hydraulic engineers.

He became famous for the new devices he used to rebuild the towers of the noble families in the city. Between 1458 and 1467 he worked in Florence for Cosimo de 'Medici the Elder and in Milan . Then he returned to his hometown. Here he created the plans for the renovation of the facade of the Palazzo del Podestà , which was only carried out between 1484 and 1494 under Giovanni II Bentivoglio in the Renaissance style. In 1467 Fioravanti worked for King Matthias Corvinus in Hungary .

In 1475 he went at the invitation of Tsar Ivan III. to Russia . There he built the magnificent Uspensky Cathedral (Assumption Cathedral) in the Moscow Kremlin between 1475 and 1479 , for which he was inspired by the church of the same name in Vladimir . The cathedral is now considered to be his most important work.

According to some sources, he was from Ivan III. thrown in prison trying to return to Italy and died in captivity. Other sources say that as a military engineer and artillery commander he took part in the campaigns against Novgorod (1477-1478), Kazan (1482) and Tver (1485).
