Castello di Maredolce

Maredolce , also called Castello or Palazzo di Maredolce or della Favara, was a castle of the Norman kings of Sicily in Palermo . It is located in Parco Vecchio, the older part of the royal park south of the medieval city .

The name Favara is derived from the Arabic word Fawwara , which means spring of water and refers to a spring near the castle. The name Maredolce (sweet sea), on the other hand, refers to a lake that was fed by this spring and therefore consisted of fresh water, in contrast to the nearby Tyrrhenian Sea . This man-made lake originally surrounded the castle on three sides.
