Pale (wrestling match)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pale (Greek), the wrestling match was an important exercise in ancient Greek gymnastics , which took fifth place in the Pentathlon group .

With the discos and long jump, the Pale goes back to the earliest times of Greek gymnastics and, according to Homer, was one of the most popular competitions even in the heroic times ; in the ring schools she later found a higher education. The most common maneuvers to throw the opponent were:

  • the firm grasping of the body with both arms,
  • Grasping and pulling up one or both thighs,
  • tripping,
  • kicking the opponent's knee with the heel,
  • the wrapping and throttling of the neck with the arms,
  • violent collision of foreheads,
  • Squeezing the opponent's fingers together until he, overcome by pain, declared himself defeated.

Any unauthorized grip, especially hitting and biting, was frowned upon.
