The Palkin ( Russian Палкин ) is a traditional restaurant in Saint Petersburg , Russia .

It is located at 47 Nevsky Prospect at the confluence of Vladimir Prospect and Nevsky Prospect.

history

The name goes back to the Palkin family. It was first mentioned in 1785 and ran several restaurants. The building of today's Palkin restaurant was acquired by Konstantin Pawlowitsch Palkin in 1871 after he inherited the restaurant business from his father Pawel Palkin. The architecture professor AK Keizer was commissioned to renovate the building. The KP Palkin restaurant was opened on September 8, 1874. The Palkin comprised 25 dining rooms and, among other things, a billiard room. A majestic staircase decorated with exotic plants and a champagne fountain was remarkable .

In 1890 the hotelier and owner of delicatessen shops Vasily Solovyov bought the KP Palkin. The architect Alexander Sergejewitsch Chrenow carried out an expansion of the restaurant and a reconstruction of the concert hall of the house in 1904. Well-known singers and musicians performed in the hall. Concepts such as eating after an evening at the theater and Sunday lunch with music were introduced. The restaurant's cuisine was dominated by Russian, whereby the Palkin was one of the first restaurants in Russia to have French influences.

Personalities such as the poet Alexander Blok , the scientist Alexander Butlerow , the painter Mikhail Saltykow-Shchedrin , the composer Peter Tchaikovsky and the writers Nikolai Gogol , Fyodor Dostoyevsky , Nikolai Leskov and Anton Chekhov frequented the KP Palkin .

After the October Revolution , the restaurant was converted into the Titan cinema in 1925 . It became a popular meeting place for the people of Saint Petersburg. In 1934 it was the premiere cinema of the film Chapayev , which thematized the Russian civil war. In Titan International Film Festival took place.

In March 1995 the Premier Casino Club was set up in the house . Then there were plans to set up a Palkin restaurant again. The necessary restoration work was carried out with the support of experts from the Hermitage . Particular attention was paid to the restoration of the original interior design and furnishings. The Palkin reopened in the summer of 2002.

Equipment and gastronomic concept

There are several restaurant areas in the building, which have been restored in the style of the early 20th century. There is a large hall, the fireplace room, the chess room, a bar and the red foyer . The terrace, built on pillars and protruding into the Nevsky Prospect, is remarkable.

The restaurant's cuisine is based on the historical cuisine of the Russian aristocracy. There is an extensive wine list but also a wide range of brandy, cognac, calvados, vodka, whiskey and gin. Cigars are also offered.

Live music is often played in the restaurant. There are also exhibition areas.

Trivia

In the tactical shooter Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege , released in 2015, the map of the fictional "Cafe Dostojewski" is used, which was clearly inspired by the Palkin restaurant in terms of location, appearance and furnishings.
