Palladius (writer)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Palladius Rutilius Taurus Aemilianus ( Palladius for short ) was a Roman specialist writer. He probably lived in the 5th century.

Opus agriculturae

The Opus agriculturae (also called De re rustica ) has survived from Palladius , a representation of agriculture in 14 books and a didactic poem. The first book contains general instructions. In books 2–13 the author describes in detail the typical work on a Roman farm for each month of the year. Book 14, which was discovered by Josef Svnung in 1925 and edited in 1926, is about veterinary medicine . The didactic poem gives instructions on tree refinement (Carmen de insitione) in metric form (distiches). Typical of Palladius is the restriction to practical instructions.
