Atlantis is a board game by Julian and C. Courtland-Smith for 2 to 4 people, ages 8+.

It first appeared in 1982 as Survive! at Parker Brothers in the USA and bilingual as Survive! Survivre! in Canada. The island in this version consists only of cardboard plates. In 1986, Waddington Games introduced a new version with three-dimensional plastic island parts under the title Escape from Atlantis in Great Britain. This version was also released in Canada by Waddington Sanders . In 1988 Schmidt Spiele acquired a license to produce Atlantis in Europe. At Selecta Spel en Hobby appeared a Dutch and Joker Finnish output. In 1996/97 Waddingtons and Parker, both of which now belong to Hasbro , published a new edition in different languages.

description

The game lasts around 50 minutes and is designed to simulate the rescue of the people from the gradually sinking island of Atlantis . The aim of the game is to bring all of your own characters ashore and to prevent the other players from doing this.

equipment

The playing field is divided into numerous hexagonal fields. In the four corners there are coral banks that will later serve as a saving shore for the citizens of Atlantis .

First the island is built from gray (mountains), green (forest) and yellow (beach) plastic parts. The players now alternately place their twelve figures (different colored pawns ) on the pieces. The wheel of fortune (there is no dice) is a hand-operated display to use dolphins, sharks or sea monsters.

procedure

If the island is populated, the catastrophe begins. Each player has 3 movement points per turn. He can jump his figures into the water and then let them swim, put them in a boat or ride a dolphin . The other players try to prevent this by using sea monsters , octopuses and sharks . With every move a part of the island sinks (is taken off the board), so that it becomes more and more difficult to lead your pieces safely to the mainland . However, the unpopulated parts always sink first, from the outside in. A symbol can be seen on the underside of the sunken part , which determines the event (vortex, shark, octopus, etc.) that will now occur. By turning the wheel of fortune you can move animals and bring boats closer. One boat holds three Atlanteans and can be occupied by different participants. However, only those who have the majority in the boat can decide. If there is a tie, everyone can steer the boat when it is their turn.

Impact of marine life

  • Sharks kill swimming Atlanteans unless they are accompanied by a dolphin. Passengers in boats have nothing to fear.
  • Octopuses destroy boats, the occupants can move on by swimming.
  • Sea monsters destroy boats and kill the swimmers.
  • You can ride the dolphins quickly on land. They protect the swimmer from all other creatures.

Playing

The game ends when all participants have saved all of their living characters.

Variations

A modification of the game, which is not provided for in the rules of the game , can also contain a cooperative element , namely if all players stand together against the rigors of fate and try to save all residents.
