action

The young professional footballer Walter Pallmann (19) plays for the second division club FC Viktoria. During the season finale, the club is about to prevent relegation. The story of the book begins at the beginning of stoppage time in the last game of the season when the score is 3: 3. Pallmann, who is only called Pall , gets the ball in front of his feet after a punch in his own penalty area . He starts a solo and can advance to the other edge of the penalty area. There he shoots the ball into the goal after a duel through talent and ball safety. This action evokes an unexpected media response. Because of the relegation battle, more reporters than usual were present at the game.

Pall is called to the current gym after the game and, with a little luck, asserts himself there. In the evening, Pallmann is called at home by Holldorf, the manager of the national top club FC Bavaria. The reader learns that Holldorf has been interested in Pall for some time and that he and Pall had already made phone calls. Holldorf now fears that Borussia will try to seduce Pall with money to sign a contract, but in the end Pallmann decides against his father's will and in favor of the financially weaker offer from FC Bavaria. During the trial days, Pall ponders a lot about his father, whom he adored as a child. Pallmann's father was also a footballer. The description of the alcohol plume every evening after his father's training and games makes it clear that he had far less success with it. Pall now despises his father because he does not admit his failure and always blames everything but himself.

Once at the club, Pall had to struggle with all sorts of problems. The leading figure of the club, Furtner, easily gets the coach through that Pallmann is placed in a position that he cannot play well. Because of his poor performance, Pallmann gets into trouble with Holldorf and an appointment with a psychiatrist. Although his club colleague Riedl and the famous singer Madou, with whom Pallmann has a relationship, try to help, only the appointment with the psychiatrist Pallmann can play better again.

In the course of a game in the GDR against the GDR champions Dynamo , he was asked to be the contact person for an illegal move from Peter Fritsche, the best player in the GDR, to FC Bavaria. In the second leg against Dynamo in Germany , Fritsche managed to escape. For the time being he is staying in Pallmann's apartment. The move from Fritsche to FC Bavaria is made official, but because it was an illegal move, Fritsche is no longer allowed to play football for a whole year. Instead, he has to see how Pallmann climbs the career ladder and shows ambitions to be a national player soon. Fritsche suffers from depression , experiments with drugs and causes a car accident in Pallmann's sports car. Although he survived, he was unable to play football because of the knee injuries.

Pallmann, whose biggest problem was Fritsche himself all along, is now struggling to come to terms with the end of his career. When he finally makes it, his first game in the national team is on. It's an away game against Brazil . While Brazil dominated in the first half due to their playing culture and technique, Germany could catch up in the second half.

The game and book end with Pall performing an action similar to that at the beginning of the book. A ball bounces over him and he tries to equalize by pushing the ball back in front of him with the sole of his foot. But unlike at the beginning, this shot hits the crossbar.

Trivia

  • Obviously, FC Bavaria is FC Bayern Munich , Holldorf is Uli Hoeneß , etc.
  • The plot of the book consists largely of the alternation between high phases Pallmann and setbacks / problems (e.g .: first the career jump with the change to Bavaria, then the problems with Furtner and the simultaneous drop in performance.)
