Irene Alt (born October 5, 1957 in Völklingen ) is a German politician ( Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen ). From May 18, 2011 to May 18, 2016, she was Minister for Integration, Family, Children, Youth and Women in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate .

Education, work and family

Alt completed training as an educator and was then u. a. Head of a day care center . In 1999 she started her own business as a freelance trainer and was then regional director of the commercial training institute ibis acam for several years . She is married, has two grown daughters, two grandchildren and lives in Budenheim .

politics

From 1989 onwards, Alt volunteered in local politics in the Budenheim community, initially as an honorary councilor, then as a parliamentary group spokesperson, committee member and councilor. In 1998 she joined the Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen party. In 1999 she became a member of the district council of the Mainz-Bingen district , in which she was later elected parliamentary group spokeswoman for Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen. On October 8, 2004, Alt was elected full-time second district member for youth and social affairs by the district council with effect from January 1, 2005. Her term of office ended on May 17, 2011. From 2008 to 2011, Alt was also an active member of the board of the GARRP (Greens and Alternative in the Councils and Parliaments of Rhineland-Palatinate).

After the state elections in March 2011 and the formation of a red-green government coalition, Alt was appointed Minister for Integration, Family, Children, Youth and Women in the Beck V cabinet on May 18 of the same year . It remained so in the resignation of Kurt Beck's subsequent Dreyer I cabinet . The fields of activity of this newly created department were up until then also the focus of her local political commitment. Until the end of her term of office, Alt advocated a “ welcoming culture ”, the intercultural opening of society and a humane refugee policy. Another goal of her political work was the reconciliation of family and work from the point of view of equality between women and men.
