The aquarium of Palma de Mallorca is a combination of an aquarium and a leisure / adventure park in Palma de Mallorca, Spain .

The building complex including gardens, which was built in 2003 on an area of 4.2 hectares at a cost of 32 million euros, contains around 8,000 specimens of more than 700 marine animal species in 55 basins with 5 million liters of water. The biotopes shown as examples relate to the Mediterranean , the Indian Ocean , the Atlantic and the Pacific Ocean . There are large specimens of sharks , rays and sea turtles . Located directly on the western part of Playa de Palma , the aquarium has become a tourist attraction. The large roof garden, which is laid out like a jungle, is the second largest of its kind in Europe. In addition to the commercial purpose of the aquarium, an ideal one is also pursued: the preservation of marine fauna and flora in endangered biotopes, for example the sensitive coral settlements in the Indian Ocean, is scientifically accompanied, demonstrated in practice and shown in special guided tours. A "normal" tour takes about 3–4 hours.

The aquarium is located near the “Platja de Palma” motorway exit and is connected to downtown Palma by several bus routes. It is a 10-minute drive from Palma de Mallorca Airport .

Research and conservation

The Mallorcan aquarium develops programs for the cultivation and repair of coral reefs in an artificially created and controlled environment (MAC). In addition, the aquarium is running a campaign to protect the red tuna in the Mediterranean, a species threatened with extinction due to overfishing. There is a separate exhibition on this. The aquarium supports a project to conserve Limonium barceloi, an endemic plant species of the south of the Balearic Islands. To protect the environment, the Palma Aquarium team regularly takes part in rescue and rehabilitation measures for marine animals. The research assignment is fulfilled in cooperation with universities and research centers. The aim of this cooperation is to develop and implement programs for the recovery of stocks that are endangered or threatened with extinction in the marine park facilities.
