The palm lock is a chamber lock in Lauenburg / Elbe in Schleswig-Holstein , it is the oldest chamber lock ( boiler lock ) in Europe.

history

The palm lock was built entirely of wood in the course of the Stecknitz Canal in 1398 and was one of 15 locks in this first watershed canal in the world (construction period 1392–1398). Since the Middle Ages , the lock has also been known as the Schlüse zu Bockhorst . It was documented as a chamber lock since 1480.

In the 17th century it got its current name after Palm, the lock keeper at the time. In 1724, on the orders of George I of Great Britain, the lock was expanded and it was lined with hewn natural stone. A coat of arms in the lock wall reminds of this expansion.

The lock remained in operation until September 1, 1896. In 1962 the palm lock was restored in the course of the dike in the Stecknitz estuary.

Function of the lock

After the Stecknitz barge had entered the lock gates were locked by the lock keeper. The lock keeper then opened the appropriate lock gate as required for the outflow or inflow of the water . These lock gates regulated the raising or lowering of the water level in the lock. After this process, the lock gate opposite was opened again, and the Stecknitz barge was able to continue its journey. There was room for up to 12 barges per lock in the boiler lock.
