Pamphilus of Alexandria

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pamphilus of Alexandria was a grammarian and lexicographer of the 1st century AD.

Pamphilos wrote a lexicon of languages and subjects in 95 books, which has not survived. It was arranged alphabetically, but also according to subject groups. It apparently mainly contained rare terms and their explanations. For this work he drew mainly from older lexicographical works, such as that of Didymos Chalkenteros or Aristophanes of Byzantium . The work of Pamphilos was later rearranged by Iulius Vestinus and Diogenianos Grammatikos and summarized in five books.
