The Paneriai Railway Tunnel (lit. Panerių ležinkelio tunelis ) is one of two railway tunnels in Lithuania . It is located under the hills in the Paneriai Forest in Vilnius . The tunnel is 6.4 m high, 8 m wide and 427 m long.

history

The construction of the Paneriai tunnel began in 1859 by the decision of the Russian Tsar Alexander II , when the Vilnius - Lentvaris line of the Petersburg-Warsaw Railway was being built. The hills in the forest towards Lentvaris were an obstacle. The Paneriai railway tunnel was primarily used to bypass a topographical obstacle. At the same time, the Kaunas railway tunnel was built . Both were the first in Lithuania and Russia and are among the first in Eastern Europe . In 1960, after almost a hundred years, the railway in the tunnel was stopped because the route of the railway line was changed.

Current condition

Current condition: The eastern entrance has been filled in and the ceiling has partially collapsed

The tunnel walls are now heavily corroded and the masonry is flaking off over a large area. Occasionally the walls are no longer stable. A few meters after the east portal, the ceiling has partially collapsed and you can see the surface and daylight from the east portal through the resulting opening.

It is no longer possible to pass the tunnel today. Barriers were erected at both entrances. A patchy wall was built at the east portal and behind it the tunnel cross-section was completely filled with sand. At the west portal about 20 m after the entrance a 3 m high wall with barbed wire was erected on the crown. Behind it, the cross-section was also filled with sand. However, at the top of the sand backfill there is a small opening to the part of the tunnel behind.

natural reserve

The tunnel system has been under special nature protection (zoologinis gamtos paveldo objektas) since 2009, as numerous protected bat species live and hibernate in the tunnel system. Six species of bats particularly affected by extinction have been recorded, including the pond bat and the water bat .
