Panfilov Park (Bishkek)

The Panfilov Park is a large park in the center of the Kyrgyz capital Bishkek .

Surname

The park is named after the Soviet major general Ivan Vasilyevich Panfilov , who was considered a national hero in the Soviet Union because in November 1941 he allegedly opposed twice as many German tanks with 28 infantrymen and died in the process. Today, however, this story is regarded as an untrue propaganda legend. Nevertheless, many streets and squares in the states of the former Soviet Union are named after the military, for example the Park of the 28 Panfilowzy in Almaty, Kazakhstan .

location

The square is right in the center of Bishkek. To the south, the park merges into the White House , which houses the Kyrgyz President's office. In the west, the Dolen Omurzakov Stadium is immediately adjacent .

layout

The park with its numerous trees is a popular place for the residents of Bishkek to relax. It also has a small amusement park with lots of play equipment for children. In October 2017, a new Ferris wheel was opened which, at 50 meters, is almost twice as high as the previous Ferris wheel. In memory of the namesake of the park, there is a monument to the so-called defenders of Moscow around Panfilov. In addition, busts commemorate soldiers from Kyrgyzstan who were honored for their deeds in World War II.
