Panoptikum was an Austrian television show that ran from February 8, 1975 to November 16, 1996 on ORF 1 .

Panoptikum was a news program similar to a weekly newsreel, with news from all over the world. At the beginning, the program ran after the Saturday evening feature film, but the broadcast was then moved to Saturdays, 6 p.m. and later to Fridays, 6 p.m.

The reports were only interrupted by short animated graphics. After the broadcast was canceled, this format was continued as part of the ORF weekly newsreel, albeit with moderation between the film reports.

As spokesman functioned alternately Walter Benn and Christa Stampfer , the theme song of the show was the Unsquare Dance by Dave Brubeck . This broadcast is also mainly responsible for the fact that this song is still very well known and popular in Austria today.
