The company was founded in 1986 by Erich Fitz and specialized in the manufacture, sale and rental of film equipment. In 1990 Panther GmbH moved to Oberhaching near Munich together with the subsidiary HTG GmbH, which was founded in 1988 .

In 1991 two more rental locations were opened in Prague and Hamburg . In 1999, due to the strong expansion, Fitz decided to build its own building to accommodate all areas of Panther and HTG. The new building was occupied in January 2001.

At the Cinec in Munich in 2008, the company celebrated the 25th anniversary of Panther dollys and presented the 1000th electro-mechanical dolly, which was built in gold for the occasion.

In 2010 Panther developed the Tristar and opened another film equipment rental, the "Panther Rental Berlin". A year later, the Fitz family made a strategic decision and ended the rental business because they no longer wanted to compete with their customers. "Panther Rental Prague" was sold to ARRI . In 2012 the Panther Rental locations in Munich, Hamburg and Berlin were sold to a subsidiary of Bavaria Studios & Production Services in order to consistently implement the strategic decision of 2011.

Andreas Fitz, the founder's son, bought the remaining company shares from his family in 2012 and thus became the sole shareholder . Since then, the company has concentrated on the development and sale of dollies and cranes.
