Paolo De Poli (born August 1, 1905 in Padua , Italy ; † September 21, 1996 there ) was an Italian artist and designer of the 20th century.

Life

After training in drawing and metal relief at the Pietro Selvatico art school in Padua and in oil painting in the Atelier del Maler Trentin in Verona , Paolo De Poli began a career as a portrait and landscape painter. He took part in the XV Venice Biennale for the first time in 1926 with an oil painting . Over the years he was fascinated by the old and traditional enamel art on metal while traveling and visiting art and archeology museums and he took up this art.

From the beginning of the 1930s he practiced handicrafts on small objects with a variety of shapes and shiny colors. He worked for Gio Ponti in the realization of furniture and decorative panels (in the 1940s) and design objects and sculptures with animal motifs (in the 1950s). In addition to a rich production of vases, bowls, mugs, plates, door handles and signs made of enamel copper, he also worked on large decorative panels for cruise ships, universities, public buildings and private apartments of art collectors both in Italy and abroad.

He also dealt with religious art: he created altarpieces and pictures of the Stations of the Cross for churches in Padua, Abano Terme and Bergamo. In his studio in Padua, he was always experimenting with new forms of expression: Here he designed and completed hundreds of works of art in strong hues and sophisticated color nuances.

His works have been presented in the most important world exhibitions: 1935 in Brussels , 1937 in Paris , 1939 in New York and worldwide at hundreds of art exhibitions and art fairs as part of events on the so-called Made in Italy. De Poli participated fourteen times in the Biennale di Venezia and ten times in the Triennale di Milano . Like Murano glass and Faenza ceramics, many of his glass enamel works on copper, such as design objects and large art panels, have been exported abroad. Today they are in the collections of the most important museums for arts and crafts and design worldwide.

In the course of his sixty years of activity, he has continuously worked as a member of arts and crafts associations and specialist commissions for the promotion and protection of art and cultural assets as well as the artist professions. When the Eremitan Church in Padua with its frescoes by Andrea Mantegna was bombed out and destroyed on March 11, 1944 , Paolo De Poli organized the discovery of the remains of the fresco, which had been put together again 56 years later. From 1960 to 1973 he was a member of the Board of Directors of the Milan Triennial. In 1970 he received the honorary title Cavaliere del Lavoro . His artist archive with the drawings, the prototypes and his correspondence are kept in the design archive of the University of Architecture (IUAV) in Venice.
