ASSOS from Papastratos

Papastratos ( Greek Παπαστράτος ) is a Greek tobacco and cigarette manufacturer . In 2003 the company was taken over by Philip Morris .

history

Evangelos Papastratos founded a cigarette factory in Piraeus in 1930 and processed Greek tobacco. In 1933 he founded a second in Berlin , the Hellas cigarette factory , the building of which was designed by Martin Punitzer . The Hellas brand was advertised with great effort. Initially, the cigarettes were only made from Greek tobacco, while in Germany only mixtures were smoked. A change in the types of cigarettes produced could no longer stop the brand's decline. Since Papastratos also had problems with the Nazis, he decided to close the factory in 1936. In 1937 he acquired the Nestor Gianaclis tobacco factory in Cairo . Evangelos Papastratos died in 1940, shortly after the Nazis had confiscated Greece's entire tobacco harvest.

The factory in Cairo closed in 1955. In Greece, Papastratos introduced the filter cigarette in 1957. A collaboration with Reemtsma began, which was given up in 1975 in favor of a collaboration with Philip Morris. In 2003 Philip Morris took over the company.

Papastratos cigarettes appear in numerous Greek novels. The Papastratos No. 1 (Assos) and No. 15 were given to SS members as payment in Southeastern Europe. The cigarettes also became internationally known because Queen Margrethe of Denmark smokes Papastratos cigarettes.
