Finding

Orthodox wayside cross on the site of the former church in Papinniemi

It is the remains of a village from the 15th to 17th centuries with an Orthodox church and its cemetery. The settlement was likely abandoned after the Russo-Swedish War of 1656-1661. Papinniemi is one of the numerous Orthodox settlements that existed in Karelia .

The archaeological site was mentioned as early as 1882, but it was forgotten again. The archaeological excavations began in 1995, mainly carried out by scientists at the University of Turku . The extraordinary and rich finds make the site unique, as the Orthodox culture of this historical period has hardly been archaeologically researched in these latitudes.

The history of settlement, which has been reconstructed using archaeological and pollen analysis methods, is currently the subject of scientific discussions.
