The Papua Beach is a 2.5 km long beach on the north coast of South Georgia . It lies on the southeastern shore of Cumberland West Bay .
The name of the beach is derived from the name Papua Cove for a small bay on this stretch of beach, which the German zoologist and doctor August Emil Alfred Szielasko (1864–1928) dubbed Penguin Bay in 1907 . The former was named by participants in the Swedish Antarctic Expedition (1901–1903) under the direction of Otto Nordenskjöld . It is named after the gentoo penguin ( Pygoscelis papua ). The South Georgia Survey transferred this name to the beach described here in the course of its surveys carried out between 1951 and 1952.
