The Cumberland West Bay (in Argentina Bahía Guardia Nacional ) is the western branch of the Cumberland Bay on the north coast of South Georgia . It extends from Larsen Point , which is 4 km wide, 11 km inland.
The bay was mapped under the name West Bay during the Swedish Antarctic Expedition (1901–1903) under the direction of Otto Nordenskjöld . After another survey by participants in the British Discovery Investigations between 1926 and 1929, it was also named West Cumberland Bay . Both names have been used in parallel since then, until the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee decided in 1955 to change the name to the current form in order to take into account the topographical naming of the entire Cumberland Bay.
