The Cumberland East Bay is the eastern branch of the Cumberland Bay on the north coast of South Georgia . It extends from Sappho Point , where its width is 5 km, 13 km inland in a southeast direction. The Nordenskjöld glacier flows into the head of the bay .
The bay was mapped under the name South Bay during the Swedish Antarctic Expedition (1901-1903) under the direction of Otto Nordenskjöld . After another survey by participants in the British Discovery Investigations between 1926 and 1929, it was given the topographically more correct name East Cumberland Bay . At the same time, the shortened form East Bay was also in use until the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee decided in 1955 to change the name to the current form in order to take into account the topographical name of the entire Cumberland Bay and a confusion with the East Bay Avoid in Prince Olav Harbor .
