The Sappho Point is a headland on the north coast of South Georgia . It marks the entrance to Cumberland East Bay to the west .
It is believed that the British navigator James Cook was the first to sight this cape in 1775 . It was named after the HMS Sappho , a protected cruiser of the Apollo class that when measuring the Cumberland Bay was used in the 1906th
