The Penguin River (English for penguin river ) is a small meandering river on the north coast of South Georgia . It flows in a mainly northeastern direction from Hamberg Lakes to Cumberland East Bay , which it reaches immediately south of Horse Head .

Participants in the Swedish Antarctic Expedition (1901–1903) led by Otto Nordenskjöld mapped it. Carl Skottsberg , botanist on the expedition, gave it his name. The name Hamberg River made by the German zoologist and doctor August Emil Alfred Szielasko (1864-1928) in 1907 did not prevail.
