The Horse Head ( English for horse head ) is a rugged headland with a striking and 10 m high cliff on the north coast of South Georgia . It is located 500 m north of the confluence of the Penguin River in the Cumberland East Bay .
Scientists from the Swedish Antarctic Expedition (1901–1903) under the direction of Otto Nordenskjöld carried out the first measurements . The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee gave it its descriptive name in 1954 after the synonymous Norwegian name Hestes Hode had long been known among whale and seal hunters.
