A parade room is a sequence of rooms in castles and residences , which were mainly used for representation and were usually not or only rarely inhabited.

The desire for representation already developed in the palace building of the Renaissance . In the baroque era it was decisive for the self-confidence of the absolutist princes , and the development of the enfilade is inextricably linked with the appearance of the baroque palaces. Visitors - whether ambassadors or supplicants - should be received in the parade rooms and be impressed by the size of the rooms and the wealth of their residents. Usually the rooms are staggered. The reception rooms were followed by galleries of paintings and mirrors , and the drawing rooms grew larger and lavish the closer they led to the prince.

The suites almost always lead to a large ballroom or a splendid bedroom. The rooms are one behind the other, like a string of pearls. Their decoration is either dedicated to the political or economic successes of the respective prince or takes up themes from mythology .

One of the most famous escapes of parade rooms is in the Palace of Versailles , where the Hercules Salon leads via the Apartment of the Planets to the War Salon , then to the Mirror Gallery and from there to the bedroom of the Sun King .

The more intimate apartments are usually opposed to the parade rooms . The rooms that were inhabited were mostly smaller and more adapted to the human dimensions because of the better heatability.
