Parascyllium sparsimaculatum is a shark belonging tothe collar carpet shark family . It lives as a deep sea species off the west coast of Australia at depths of 245 to 435 meters. So far only three individuals are known of this species.
features
The species reaches a maximum length of at least 79 centimeters. As with the other species of the genus, it is a small and very slender, elongated species. The underside of the body is flattened in a manner typical for shark species that live on the ground. The shark has a pale brown to gray basic color and five distinct saddle spots on the back as well as many thick, dark spots on the body and the fins, with a maximum of 6 spots between the two dorsal fins.
The two dorsal fins are very far back, the first dorsal fin arises behind the pelvic fins and the second clearly behind the attachment of the anal fin .
distribution and habitat
Parascyllium sparsimaculatum lives as a deep-sea species off the west coast of Australia ( Western Australia ) at depths of 245 to 435 meters and is so far only known from a very limited area.
Way of life
There is no information about the way of life of the species. It is likely to lay eggs ( oviparous ) and feed on small fish and invertebrates.
Relationship to people
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists the species as “data deficient” on its list of endangered species according to the missing data.
