Jeremiah O'Brien (politician)

Jeremiah O'Brien (born January 21, 1778 in Machias , Washington County , Massachusetts , †  May 30, 1858 in Boston , Massachusetts) was an American politician . Between 1823 and 1829 he represented the state of Maine in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Jeremiah O'Brien was born in Machias in 1778, which was then still part of Massachusetts. Since 1820 the place is part of the state of Maine. O'Brien attended public schools in his home country. Then he worked in the wood industry. Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Republican Party . He served in the Maine Senate from 1821 to 1824 . After the dissolution of his party in the 1820s, he joined the faction around President John Quincy Adams , which was in opposition to Andrew Jackson and his supporters.

In 1822, O'Brien was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the sixth constituency of Maine . There he took over from Joshua Cushman on March 4, 1823 . After two re-elections he was able to complete three consecutive terms in Congress by March 3, 1829 . Between 1825 and 1827 he was chairman of the Department of Navy's Expenditure Control Committee. During his time in Congress, there was heated discussion between supporters of his party and those of Andrew Jackson, who formed the Democratic Party in 1828 .

In the elections of 1828 O'Brien was defeated by the Democrat Leonard Jarvis . From 1832 to 1834 he was a member of the House of Representatives from Maine . Otherwise he worked again in the wood industry. Jeremiah O'Brien died in Boston on May 30, 1858 and was buried in his birthplace, Machias.
