The park is located about 30 km northeast of Chicoutimi on the north bank of the Rivière Saguenay .

history

It is unclear where the name valine comes from. It first appeared on a map by Père Laure in 1731 and on one by Nicolas Bellin in 1744. Possibly the name goes back to François Valin, a resident of L'Ancienne-Lorette near Québec who was born in 1693.

In 1863 the first logging license was issued. The area of the park was shared by the three companies MT Wyatt , Joseph D. Guay and Dunn Home & Co. They were in turn bought at the end of the 19th century by Price Brothers & Co. , which had been active in the Saguenay region since 1842. After the wood boom and especially after the Second World War, hunting and fishing clubs reserved the right to use the fauna of the later park. In 1978 this type of club in the province was dissolved and the area became a zone d'exploitation contrôlé , a zone of controlled exploitation. Even today, the park is surrounded by other zones of this type in the west, north and east.

Since the early 1960s, environmentalists tried to give this area a higher status. Starting in 1982, preparations were made to turn the area into a park, and skiers were banned in 1984. The park was established on September 19, 1996. From 1999 the Société des établissements de plein air du Québec took over all parks in the province, in 2001 all provincial parks were elevated to Parcs nationaux, as they had the task of representing all of the province's ecoregions.
