Coordinates: 32 ° 56 ′ S , 148 ° 1 ′ E Parkes Shire is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of New South Wales . The area is 5,957.6 km² and has about 14,600 inhabitants.
Parkes is located in the Central West region of the state about 350 km west of the metropolis Sydney and 310 km northwest of the Australian capital Canberra . The area comprises 61 hamlets and villages, including Alagala, Alectown, Blowclear, Bogan Gate, Bruie Plains, Gobondery, Goonumbla, Gunningbland, Kadungle, Middlefield, Mungerie, Nanardine, Parkes, Peak Hill, Terowie, Tichborne, Trewilga, The Troffs, Trundle , Yethera and parts of Cookamidgera, Tullamore and Yarrabandai. The headquarters of the Shire Council is in the city of Parkes in the southeast of the LGA, where about 10,000 people live.

Parkes Shire Council has ten members elected by LGA residents. Parkes is not divided into districts. The mayor of the council is also recruited from among the councilors.
