Election results
The Barbados Labor Party (BLP), led by Mia Mottley , managed to win all 30 seats in the House of Assembly and ousted the Democratic Labor Party (DLP) of former Prime Minister Freundel Stuart , which had ruled the country since 2008. On May 25, 2018, Mia Mottley was sworn in as the new Prime Minister, becoming the first woman in Barbados to take this office.
The 2018 elections took place at a time of slow recovery from the global economic crisis of 2008. In its election campaign, the DLP referred to the increasing economic growth in eight consecutive quarters. She promised to improve food self-sufficiency to 50% by 2026. The BLP criticized the government for taxes and the cost of living.
