Parliamentary election in Nauru 2016

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The parliamentary elections took place in Nauru on July 9, 2016 . On June 10, 2016, the parliament was dissolved by President Baron Waqa after his three-year term in office. The spokesman Ludwig Scotty called the elections for July 9th.

Electoral system

The 19 members of parliament were elected from eight multi-member constituencies using the Dowdall system , a version of the ranking ; voters selected candidates with the votes counted as a fraction of 1 divided by the ranking number (e.g., a runner-up candidate is rated 1/2); the candidates with the highest total number are elected.

Result

The results were as follows: the government retained eleven of its twelve seats; only Ludwig Scotty, the outgoing Speaker of Parliament, lost his seat, but won it again in a by-election on May 30, 2019. In contrast, the outgoing opposition retained only two of their seven seats, with wins from Kieren Keke in Yaren and Riddell Akua in Anabar.

Charmaine Scotty remained the only female MP in parliament.
