background

After the last parliamentary elections in May 1981 , the Prime Minister Surya Bahadur Thapa was deposed in July 1983 and replaced by Lokendra Bahadur Chand . Chand was formerly chairman of the National Assembly of Nepal.

The election date for the 1986 election was announced on January 23, 1986. A total of 1,548 candidates applied for the 112 seats to be elected in the National Assembly. Another 28 seats were awarded by the king .

Since many citizens are illiterate, the candidates were identified by pictorial symbols on the ballot paper. Each candidate was required to pay a deposit of 1,500 rupees , which was forfeited if they did not receive at least 10% of the votes cast in their constituency.

Results

Of the good 9 million registered voters, 5.4 million took part in the election, which corresponds to a turnout of 60.3%. Due to the remoteness of some of the electoral districts, the final results in those districts were not announced until May 22nd. According to this, 63 candidates were able to move into the National Assembly, while 74 members were able to defend their seat.

In accordance with the constitution, the newly elected National Assembly was constituted on June 9, 1986. Marich Man Singh Shrestha was elected Prime Minister on June 15 and appointed his cabinet the next day.
