The Parliament House in Edinburgh is a courthouse in Scotland . It is now the seat of the Supreme Courts of Scotland, the College of Justice , the Court of Session (the highest civil court ) and the highest criminal court in Scotland, the High Court of Justiciary . It is located in Edinburgh's old town, right on the Royal Mile next to St Giles' Cathedral . The parliament building of the newly established Scottish Parliament , on the other hand, has been in Holyrood, a district of Edinburgh, directly opposite Holyrood Palace , the official residence of the Queen in Scotland , since 2004 .

history

The Parliament House was before the Act of Union in 1707 the seat of the Parliament of Scotland ( Parliament of Scotland ). After that, the Court of Session, the College of Justice and parts of the High Court of Justiciary were housed here.

The oldest part of Parliament is Parliament Hall, which Edinburgh City Council built at its own expense as the permanent seat of the Parliament of Scotland. This makes it the oldest parliament building in the British Isles that was still built for this purpose. It was completed in 1639 based on a design by James Murray. Next to Parliament Hall is Laigh Hall with a similar design, but significantly lower. The building complex also includes the Advocates' Library and The Signet Library , an extension from 1810 to the Society of Writers to Her Majesty's Signet .
