Parnopes grandior is a species ofthe golden wasp family (Chrysididae). It is the only species of the genus in Europe.
features
The wasps reach a body length of 8 to 13 millimeters. The species is easy to recognize by its large scales on the wing joint ( tegulae ) and the flesh-colored abdomen, which only has a metallic greenish shine on the basal side. Males have four, females three visible tergites .
Occurrence
The species occurs in North Africa and South and Central Europe, east to Poland. It inhabits inland dunes and other large sandy areas. The animals fly in one generation from June to August. They are very rare in Central Europe.
Way of life
Parnopes grandior parasitizes the gyroscopic wasp ( Bembix rostrata ) as a metaparasitoid. This means that the host larva is not killed until it has fully developed. The females of Parnopes grandior can dig up the nests of their hosts and close them again after they have laid eggs, which is a rarity among the golden wasps. You go about it very quickly. Mating, on the other hand, takes a long time and usually takes place on flowers whose nectar is also absorbed.
