Parodia chrysacanthion is a species of plant in the genus Parodia from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The epithet of the species means golden thorn parody .
description
Parodia chrysacanthion grows singly or dividing dichotomously with initially broadly spherical to short columnar, light green shoots that reach a height of between 5 and 6 centimeters and a diameter of 5 centimeters. The approximately 24 ribs are clearly arranged in a spiral. They dissolve into warts, which are covered with large, very woolly hairy white areoles . The 30 to 40 radial spines are bristle-fine, easily breaking and golden yellow when they are older, more dirty dark yellow. The central spines are slightly stronger, golden yellow and about 2 inches long.
The numerous bright yellow flowers are bell-shaped and funnel-shaped and only medium-sized at 17-18 mm. The fruits are egg-shaped, small, smooth and with few seeds . These are cap-shaped, humped and shiny dark brown.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Parodia chrysacanthion is distributed in Argentina in the northern provinces of Jujuy and La Paz at altitudes of 1500 to 2000 meters.
It was first described as Echinocactus chrysacanthion in 1898 by Karl Moritz Schumann . Curt Backeberg combined the species to the genus Parodia . A synonym is Microspermia chrysacanthion (K.Schum.) Fric & Cross. (1935).
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
