Parotocinclus ( Latin : "par" = equal + Otocinclus ) is a genus from the catfish family of armor catfish (Loricariidae) and the subfamily Hypoptopomatinae . There are around 30 species that are found mainly in southeastern Brazil , but also in the Amazon basin . The eight Parotocinclus species from the Amazon basin, the Orinoco basin and the Guianas are not particularly closely related to those from southeastern Brazil. Since Parotocinclus maculicauda , the type species of the genus, occurs in southeastern Brazil,a new genus name has to be introducedfor the Amazonian Parotocinclus species.

features

Parotocinclus species are small, somewhat stocky armored catfish that reach body lengths of 3 to 6 cm and are reminiscent of the Otocinclus genus known from the aquarium hobby . The trunk is protected by three to five rows of bone plates. Characteristic of the genus is the imperforate temporal shield (posterior temple bone (perforated in Otocinclus )). An adipose fin is always present.

species

To date, around 30 valid species have been described:
