A party book is a document that contains the personal data such as name, address and often the membership number of the member of a party . The party book serves as proof of membership in the relevant party. The expression party book (= "membership card / book of a party") was first mentioned in the Duden in 1934 .

presentation

Originally the membership card or the membership book of a party ("party book") served as a continuous receipt of contributions for a party member with which he could prove how much membership fees he had paid to the party. For this purpose, for example, weekly contribution stamps with contribution amounts were stuck into the party book and receipt of payment was confirmed by stamp.

When leaving a party, the party book is returned, as many parties reserve ownership of the party book. Conversely, the return of the party book is often considered a valid declaration of resignation, so that these terms are often used synonymously in colloquial language .

Party books are still sometimes in use in the parties of the left political spectrum . In general, today's parties tend to use membership cards in a similar function (for example in credit card format).

Trivia

Party books have been the subject of satire at least since the Weimar Republic (1918–1933). For example, Kurt Tucholsky has treated the function and meaning of a party book ironically since 1930:

  • "If the howling Scylla of the right roars at such a book, the Charybdis of the left whistles:" How are you doing with the party? Do you have your party book with you? ";"
  • “Lord Curzon had a sense of humor. Hermann Müller has a party book. "
  • “It is the hopeless hopelessness of someone who has not yet found the way to the labor movement, without whom such hardship cannot be dealt with. The party book alone is certainly not enough; but neither does the book of poems. "
