The Partido Democrático de Guinea Ecuatorial ( PDGE , Spanish for Democratic Party of Equatorial Guinea ) is by far the leading party in the African state of Equatorial Guinea .

history

The party was founded in 1986 by Equatorial Guinean President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo and was the only approved party in the country until 1991. The party has come under fire for its authoritarian structure and for election manipulation and irregularities, as well as for the systematic suppression of oppositional forces.

Election results

The PDGE achieved the following results in the parliamentary elections:

  • 1988: 41 of 41 seats
  • 1993: 68 of 80 seats
  • 1999: 75 of 80 seats
  • 2004: 68 out of 100 seats, together with the so-called Democratic Opposition 98 out of 100 seats
  • 2008: 99 out of 100 seats
  • 2017: 99 out of 100 seats
