The Paso de Cortés , also Paso de Cortez , is a 3700  m high pass in Mexico , which lies between the two volcanoes Popocatépetl in the south and Iztaccíhuatl in the north.

On November 3, 1519, after the Cholula massacre , Hernán Cortés crossed the pass in order to advance into the valley of Mexico and Tenochtitlán , where he wanted to meet Moctezuma II , the then ruler of the Aztecs .
