Passau war people

The Passau war people were a mercenary army of over 10,000 men that existed between 1610 and 1611 . It was erected in 1610 by the military leader Laurentius Ramée on behalf of the Prince-Bishop of Passau Leopold Archduke of Austria and was originally intended for use in the Jülich-Kleve inheritance dispute . However, because of its looting and cruel devastation in Austria and Bohemia , it quickly gained a bad name. In 1611 the people of Passau stood in the fraternal dispute between Emperor Rudolf II and Matthias on the emperor's side. In the same year the Passau invaders in Prague and atrocities in Budweis . After the two brothers reconciled, Laurentius Ramée was arrested and sentenced to death by the sword.

The executioner Kaspar Neidhart produced paper notes with strange characters for the Passau war people, which he distributed as magic notes. These small sheets of paper, called “ Passau Art ”, were intended to make the owner immune to blows and stabs.
