Password Depot is software from AceBIT GmbH for password management .
Encryption
According to the manufacturer, Password Depot encrypts the password database on the hard drive with the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) algorithm .
The password database is secured by a master password. The main password must either be entered manually or in the form of a key file ("key file") on a mobile drive such as a USB stick or CD . A combination of main password and key file is also possible. As soon as it is entered, the program checks whether the master password can be classified as "secure" and warns the user if this is not the case.
In addition, the password database is encrypted using an "internal key" known only to the manufacturer. The manufacturer describes this as "double protection". The purpose of this is to ensure that if the AES algorithm should ever be decrypted, hackers must additionally bypass the internal key in order to view the protected files.
Functions
Storage of the data
Password Depot enables password files to be stored on an FTP server, which can then be accessed via FTP or HTTP. When accessing via HTTP, the password files can only be read, not changed; Both are possible with FTP access. The password files can also be saved on a USB stick or mobile phone.
Data security
After installation, the program is saved locally on the user's computer. External third parties therefore have no access to the files.
Automatically fill out password-protected websites and programs
One of the main functions of Password Depot is the automatic filling of dialogs on password-protected websites and local programs. For this purpose, the program creates a so-called fill-in sequence, which ensures that the relevant fields in a website or a password-protected program are filled in automatically. This allows verification to be done with a single click.
import and export
The password database can be exported in various formats: TXT , HTML , XML and CSV . In addition, the data formats of other password managers can also be imported with the help of plug-ins .
Licensing
Password Depot is sold as commercial software that is also available as freeware. The freeware version allows the administration of up to 20 passwords.
Test wins
Password Depot was able to achieve test victories in comparative tests with password management, among others in Computer Bild , PC Professional and Chip . Computer Bild's practical tests were carried out by experts from the Fraunhofer Institute , who voted the program the test winner.
criticism
Since the source code of the program is not available and thus Kerckhoffs' principle is violated, the security of the stored passwords cannot be checked.
