The Pastor Dohms School in Porto Alegre in the state of Rio Grande do Sul , Brazil , was founded in 1931 by residents of the Higienópolis district with the help of the Evangelical Community from the German consulate and some important companies.

history

When it was founded, the school was on Dom Pedro II Street and was called the German Evangelical Community School . She started her class with only nine students. In December 1935 the school moved to a Sogipa building . A year later, the church took over the school and the institution was called the Martin Luther School . Because of the advancement of nationalism, the school was closed in 1938. It was reopened a year later under the name Colégio Martin Lutero . In 1946 it was reopened as Escola Particular D. Pedro I. In 1975 a 9th to 11th grade was introduced. That is why its name became Escola de 1º. e 2º. Graus Pastor Dohms renamed. The bilingual branch (German and Portuguese) was introduced in 1991. The first class to learn German as a second language graduated from the school in 2001. It passed the DSD II, an examination that allows you to study at a German university without having to take an additional language test. Since 1998 the school has been called Colégio Pastor Dohms because of new legislation for schools . Four years later, a new unit was built, the Unidade de Ensino Lindóia , and the name became Centro de Ensino Médio Pastor Dohms . In 2002, 2050 students studied in the two units.

Since then there has also been the Capão da Canoa unit and since 2007 the Camaquã and Zona Sul units .

German

Organization in the bilingual branch (German)

As early as kindergarten, the children begin to think in German. With character and color relationships they get to know a new vocabulary and with easy songs they can speak small German sentences. The teachers tell short German stories and also use objects such as B. Fruits and toys to help students memorize vocabulary. In the third and fourth grades there are German subjects such as mathematics, geography and painting. The children can also do other activities, including a. German theater, reading night (a night in which the students sleep in school to get to know German history and other children) and a typical German breakfast. From the fifth grade onwards, the students have two German teachers, one for German and another for subjects in German. In the next year they will study for an exam, the Central German Examination A1 + (ZDP A1 +).

In the ninth grade, students take the exam and the reading competition for the German Language Diploma, Level I (DSD I). The students are tested in grammar, text comprehension, text production and orally. In the tenth grade they prepare for the DSD II exam, which is taken at UNISINOS , and then the ZDP A exam. If the students are in secondary school, they can take part in an exchange to Canada or Germany. The trips take place in January / February, but because of the DSD I examination in the ninth grade, the bilingual branch in the eighth grade travels to Germany in June / July. In every exchange, the students live with host families. In Canada , everyone, students and the two accompanying teachers, live in Montréal , a very safe city with a very good underground system. Many different cultures live together in Montréal and it is a bilingual city. The French part is very well represented, you see more advertising in French than in English, but only English is spoken in the family and in the Center Linguista. In Germany the students live in different small towns. Before they go to the host families, there is a bus trip to France, the Netherlands, Berlin and Munich. The students can get to know other cities by train. Mostly they travel in December and come back in February. There is a project from the Spanish department for an exchange to Montevideo . In the bilingual branch there is a bus trip to Berlin, Munich, Rothenburg am Neckar, Tübingen, Stuttgart, Dresden and the Zugspitze, where the students live in youth hostels before going to their host families in smaller towns.

Projects

There are various projects such as dancing, choir, French, Italian, photography and painting as compulsory electives to supplement regular lessons.

For example, since 2001, students have been able to take part in a choir project. The choir meets at school on Tuesdays at 6 a.m. The repertoire is mostly MPB songs, but participants can suggest other music. Everyone can take part, there is no “voice test”. Every year the group goes to a festival, the "ENCORSE", where they see other performances and present themselves. In 2005 the group made a trip to Rio de Janeiro .
