Patricia Marion Johnson (* 1934 in London ) is a British opera singer ( mezzo-soprano ).

Career

Patricia Johnson studied singing with Maria Linkers in London. She has a strong, flexible voice and sings with strong dramatic expression.

After completing her studies, Patricia Johnson sang in the Covent Garden Opera choir before joining Sadlers Wells Opera as a soloist in 1954. Among her first roles were the title role in Carmen , Dalila ( Samson et Dalila ) and Azucena ( Il trovatore ). From 1957 she worked at the Basel Opera and impressed there especially in the title role of La Cenerentola . In 1961 she moved to the Deutsche Oper Berlin , where she appeared as Azucena, Eboli ( Don Carlos ) and Fricka ( Der Ring des Nibelungen ). She was the 1965 premiere of Henze's The Young Lord the Baroness Grünwiesel, and in 1975 she sang in Lulu Die Geschwitz and a role in Cavalli's La Calisto .

Patricia Johnson first appeared at the Salzburg Festival in 1962/1963, as Marzelline in Le nozze di Figaro . Her roles in Glyndebourne from 1965 to 1968 include Jane Seymour in Anna Bolena , Lady Billows in Albert Herring , the sorceress in Dido and Aeneas and Storgè in Jephtha . At Covent Garden Opera she was Countess de Coigny in Andrea Chénier and in 1985 she sang Andromache in Michael Tippett's King Priam , Queen Gertrude in Humphrey Searle's Hamlet , the sexton in Jenůfa , Marzelline, Türkenbaba in The Rake's Progress and Mrs. Sedley in Peter Grimes . Johnson has also sung in Santa Fe and Aix-en-Provence . Her roles range from Cenerentola, Eboli and Lady Macbeth (in Verdi's Macbeth ) to Fricka and Herodias (in Strauss' Salome ). She also portrayed Claire Zachanassian in The Old Lady's Visit . In 1989 Patricia Johnson sang the old lady in Leonard Bernstein's Candide and Adelaide in Arabella . The Kabanichka in Katja Kabanowa is considered one of her best interpretations. In 1991 she appeared in many concerts and oratorios.
